CLUB NOVICE FOIL COMPETITION DEC 2007

Despite this, however, it was hard to determine the real novices from the more experienced ones. after
the initial mixed poules, the top 4 fencers went straight into the DE semi finals.  This saw Ben
Sutherland against Rob Hedges and Natalia Chivers facing Gary Wright.
Following two extremely hard fought semi-finals, Natalia and Ben triumphed to meet in the final.
Despite her recent outstanding performances, however, Natalia was unable to overcome Ben who
triumphed 15 - 6.  There was no disgrace, though, in being beaten by a more experienced fencer on
top of his form at the moment.

So the final placings were as follows...

1st        Ben Sutherland
2nd       Natalia Chivers
3rd=      Rob Hedges
         Gary Wright
Also competed

Lucy Smith
Helen Simpson

Well done to all who took part - in particular the 2 very sporting losing semi-finallists.  Thanks also to
John for his organisation of the event and to Don for giving up his evening of fencing to preside so
many bouts.

                               CLUB FOIL COMPETITION DEC 2007

Some more exciting bouts and a few unexpected results.  A special mention to Don Cook for achieving
a bronze medal so soon after his knee operation and commiserations to Natalie Richards for a fine run
of consistent results in all weapons but just missing out on the title in each one.
The Ladies final was a very close run affair with Natalie expected to justify her no. 1 seeding by
retaining her title.  Unfortunately, she came up against a very determined Sherry Fuller in fine form
who ran out the eventual winner by 15 points to 13.
In the Men's competition, Richard Sims and Chris Sullivan breezed their way through to the final as
expected although Trevor Richards and Don Cook put up some resistance in the respective semi finals.
Come the final reckoning, though, Richard was in no mood to give up his title and after a hard fought
contest he emerged the eventual winner by 15 points to 6.

The final placings (with Master/Champion at Arms points in brackets) were as follows...

MENS                                                              LADIES

1   RICHARD SIMS   (17)                                SHERRY FULLER  (5)
2   CHRIS SULLIVAN  (16)                             NATALIE RICHARDS (4)
3   DON COOK                                               HELEN SIMPSON

11 HYWEL McARDLE (7)
12 LEWIS TULLET
13 TIM ROSE

That meant that once again, the winner of the Master at Arms trophy is...
RICHARD SIMS

and the Champion at Arms is...
SHERRY FULLER

Congratulations to you both and thanks to John for organising the events so well and to David Sach
who brought his International refereeing expertise to the final bouts.

Next week sees the Novice competition.

COUNTY EPEE COMPETITION - OCT. 2007

Now that the County events are being held at our home there is no excuse for a poor turnout and so it
was gratifying to see that from a total entry (Mens & Womens) of 23 fencers, 9 were from our Club.
Unfortunately, despite some early promise in the poules, the final results were not as good as they
could have been, save for John Hayes who gave a true captain's performance and Ellie Hayward -
both of whom achieved Bronze medals.
Well done to you both.

Despite the disappointing results, well done to everyone from our Club who turned out to fence - and
particularly to Helen Simpson fencing in her first competition.

Finally, a thank you to the organisers for a friendly, well run event that provided a nice amount of
fencing.

                                     CLUB NIGHT - 17/7/07

We don't normally bother to comment on Club night 'competitions'.  However, mention must go on this
occasion to a relatively new fencer who fenced out of his skin to defeat a number of more experienced
members and emerge as victor in a mini tournament.
Club Captain John Hayes arranged a one hit epee competition by way of a change and this proved to
be very popular and enjoyable - particularly for
Matt Coughlan who, despite only picking up the
weapon a few weeks ago and having fenced for less than a year, still managed to win the poule.
Well done Matt - the rest of us old epeeists are going to have to be watching out for you in the
future!

                             WICKFORD FRIENDLY - MAY 2007

A number of fencers made the short journey to Wickford for a friendly competition with our near
neighbours.
This time round, the evening took the format of team competitions with the results as follows...

The first Epee competition was won by Chelmsford  45-34. The second competition in this discipline
saw a much closer contest with Wickford narrowly squeezing a 45-44 victory.

The Foil competition was an altogether different story.  Wickford are traditionally a strong Foil club and
this was evident in their double victory over us 40-15 and 45-25.

Despite the disappointing result from our aspect, however, an enjoyable evening's fencing occurred
and we are grateful to Wickford Fencing Club for their hospitality.

The CARU fencers who took part were (in no particular order)...

  • Sherry Fuller
  • Liam Corkhill
  • John Hayes
  • Mike Jarvis
  • Lewis Tullett
  • Fiona Lawson
  • Tim Rose

CLUB SABRE COMPETITION - MAY 2007

For a number of reasons, the committee decided to break with tradition and spread the club
competitions throughout the year - thus giving fencers the chance to prepare for a perhaps unfamiliar
weapon.
As a result, the Sabre competition was held first and it proved to be a full and interesting event
spanning 2 weeks.  It was good to see such a good turn out and particularly gratifying to see so many
new members having a go at a very difficult weapon.
The ladies were the first to contest their final and this turned out to be a repeat of last year with Natalie
Richards taking on Sherry Fuller.  Natalie was perhaps unfortunate to meet a fencer at the top of her
form and Sherry consequently retained her title as Ladies champion.
With last year's Mens' Silver medallist unable to compete, there could be no repeat of last year's final.
It was therefore left to reigning Master at Arms, Richard Sims, to try and prise the trophy away from
current holder - Chris Sullivan. And for a while, it looked as though he might just do it.  After one of the
most exciting Sabre finals seen at the Club, the fencers were level at 14 apiece with the trophy
hanging in the balance.  Despite drawing on his depths of skill and experience, though, Richard
conceded the deciding point and Chris retained his title.
Our thanks go to David Sach for coming along to referee. The final results were as follows (with
Master/Champion at Arms points in brackets)...

MEN

Gold                 Chris Sullivan (16)
Silver                Richard Sims  (15)

EASTERN REGION COMPETITIONS - APRIL 2007

After some delays and last minute rearrangements, the Regional competitions were held over two
weekends at Brentwood school with the Restricted and Senior competitions being held simultaneously.
In our quest to regain the Anita Bales trophy we submitted some strong squads and were very pleased
with our results overall.
The first weekend saw the restricted epee and sabre and the senior foil and the club came away with
an amazing haul of 7 medals.
Richard Sims and Natalie Richards both achieved Gold in their respective sabre competitions in which
Simon Burton gained a Silver and Mike Jarvis a Bronze, Natalie Richards also achieved a Bronze in
the ladies epee and Liam Corkhill and Trevor Richards won Silver and Bronze medals respectively in
the Epee.
Chris Hayward and Patrick Ward also fenced to help gain valuable trophy points.
The second week saw the reverse competitions of the first week (if you get my drift!).  This time we
took an incredible squad of 11 fencers.  Our only medal winner this week was Fiona Lawson in the Foil
who achieved a Bronze medal.
This was very nearly a tale of glory for Fiona who, it must be remembered, has been fencing for less
than a year.  In the Silver medal bout, she came up against a more experienced and more
accomplished fencer but immediately took a 5-1 lead.  She soon got over the disappointment of
discovering that DEs go up to 15 and remained in the lead right up to the final 1 minute break before
going into the last session with a 13-10 lead.  Unfortunately, Fiona's lack of experience took its toll and
with exhaustion setting in, despite taking a further point, her opponent just snatched victory by the
narrowest of margins 15-14.
Well done Fiona, though, for putting up a spirited and entertaining fight in which she was certainly not
disgraced.  Her Bronze medal was well earned.
Finally, mention must also go to John Ward and Tim Rose in what I believe was their first competition
and to Lewis Tullett.  Again, all fencers who competed have helped us on the way to regaining 'our'
trophy.
Full results and final positions are now available on the Eastern Region site.

4 WEAPON TOURNAMENT, St. Neots - FEB 2007

We entered this interesting but enjoyable competition for the first time last year and, as we had such a
good time, decided to make the trek to St Neots again.  The organisers, Huntingdonshire Fencing
Club, kindly allowed us to enter 3 teams this year and despite a couple of late withdrawals because of
illness and other commitments we were able to field all 3 teams with the need only to call upon 1
fencer
(thanks very much, Josh for being a CARU fencer for the day) to make up the numbers.
It was an interesting and eventful day all round!!
To start with, mention must go to Fiona Lawson, Tim Rose and Patrick Ward for taking part in their first
competitions.  All three represented their Club admirably and, we hope, enjoyed themselves along the
way.
Congratulations (and commiserations) must also go to the A Team of Trevor Richards, John Hayes,
Natalie Richards and Richard Sims for just missing out on a medal position.  Despite some strong
individual performances
(in particular Richard pulling back an incredible 22 point deficit to defeat his
opponent by the narrowest of margins)
and a great team spirit, they were unable to win the 3rd place
play off and had to be satisfied with a 4th position.
The remainder of the squad - Liam Corkhill, Belinda Hunt, Don Cook and Mike Jarvis all gave a good
account of themselves and despite the B & C teams only achieving 9th and 10th places respectively,
they were certainly not disgraced.
Performance of the day, however, must go to Mike Jarvis.  Following his early exit from the competition
as Sabreur with the C team, Mike was asked to make up the numbers for one of the host's
Huntingdonshire Teams.  Despite fencing with a weapon that was new to him, Mike accepted the
challenge and following some epic performances emerged with a Silver Medal after defeat in the final
to a very strong and experienced CADS team.  On behalf of all the Club - our very warmest
congratulations go to Mike - our star for the day!!

One final word of thanks to the organisers - Hunts. Fencing Club.  A great competition with good
facilities and a friendly atmosphere (although some soundproofing at the end of the hall would help).
Despite this we look forward to taking part again next year.
